Science & Engineering Libraries

UC access to 2014 Elsevier ebooks!

The California Digital Library has recently purchased 2014 Elsevier ebooks, providing access to all the UCs. This collection includes ebooks in many disciplines, and they will be released through 2014. Also throughout 2014, these titles will appear in the library catalogs, OskiCat and Melvyl.

A complete listing of all books is here: http://info.sciencedirect.com/books/titles, and until these are in the library catalog, you may access them via the links here: http://info.sciencedirect.com/techsupport/books/ebook2014.htm.

The collection spans multiple subject collections published under well-known imprints within science, technology, and health sciences disciplines – including Academic Press, North-Holland, Pergamon, Mosby, W.B. Saunders and Butterworth-Heinemann. Collections also include new titles in food science and social sciences from the recent acquisition of Woodhead Publishing and plastics engineering titles through a partnership with Hanser Publications. The ebooks are available with no DRM restrictions and are integrated with Elsevier journals on the Science Direct platform.

Henry Stewart Talks

The Henry Stewart Talks are a collection of over 1500 online lectures and seminars, many by UC Berkeley Faculty; covering biochemistry, cancer, cell biology, drug discovery, genetics, immunology, microbiology and more.

UC Berkeley can access the – Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection.

More JoVE for visualized experiments

JoVE, the Journal of Visualized Experiments, is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes in video format.  Learn experimental methods and research results by watching authors dynamically present their methods, data analyses, and results.

We’ve expanded our subscription to include 7 JoVE sections.  Check them out!

GeoScienceWorld now available

UC Berkeley now has access to GeoScienceWorld, an online collection of over 40 peer-reviewed journals from a variety of geosciences publishers including the following:

  • American Association of Petroleum Geologists
  • Clay Minerals Society
  • Geological Society of America
  • Geological Society of London
  • Mineralogical Society of America
  • Paleontological Society
  • Seismological Society of America
  • Society for Sedimentary Geology
  • Society of Exploration Geophysicists

This database of full-text journals is integrated with GeoRef to allow searching across citations and abstracts from additional journals and conference in the geosciences.

New content in Web of Knowledge

UC’s subscription to the Web of Knowledge now features more content than ever before! New databases available for searching on the Web of Knowledge platform include:

  • Book Citation Index (2005-present)
  • Conference Proceedings Citation Index (1990-present)
  • Current Contents Connect (1998-present)
  • Current Chemical Reactions (1985-present)
  • Data Citation Index (1900-present)
  • Derwent Innovations Index (1993-present)
  • Index Chemicus (1993-present)

Many users will be familiar with searching Web of Knowledge in order to access Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports, BIOSIS, and Inspec. Of particular interest for science and engineering researchers may be the Data Citation Index, which allows users to discover research data, including data studies, data sets from a wide range of international data repositories and connect them with the scientific literature to track data citation. In addition, the Derwent Innovations Index gives UC researchers a new way to search and cite patent information.

More information and tips on searching can be found on the Web of Knowledge training site.

Nature chemistry, Nature climate change and Nature communications

After successful negotiations, UC campuses now have access to three additional Nature journals:

CRCnetBASE downtime March 1

CRC Press posted the following announcement on CRCnetBASE about a planned downtime: “CRCnetBASE will undergo essential maintenance on Saturday 1st March for a period of up to 16 hours. During this time the site will not be available to users and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. Users will not be able to access content on the site from 11:00 EST through the end of the maintenance period.”

Later hours at the Engineering Library start March 2

Beginning March 2, the Engineering Library will be extending its hours to include later hours as a pilot project through Spring 2015. During the pilot, the hours for the Spring and Fall semesters will be:

  • Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-midnight
  • Friday: 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1 p.m.-11 p.m.

Please note the new opening hour and consult the Library Hours page to check the hours for particular days. The library will evaluate usage during the pilot to determine whether the extended hours will be continued past Spring 2015. We thank the College of Engineering for providing funding for this pilot project, and the entire office of ASUC Senator Quinn Z Shen, Thiagu Sezhian, and Byran Yang for proposing the idea and gathering student support for it.
